ABSTRACT

This chapter addresses the research gap on frugal innovation by probing more deeply into its contents from a design process perspective. It provides an interesting look into the development of frugality in innovation research through design thinking. Substantial media attention has been given to the importance of frugal innovation but limited progress has been made in the academic literature. The design process of frugal innovation involves creating sustainable improvements by using limited resources but boldly making systemic change. Entrepreneurial identities involve cognitive schemas of interpretations that enable a better understanding of why a person associates with entrepreneurship. Entrepreneurial leadership is a social process, as it involves interaction between individuals and followers that involve an agency perspective. Entrepreneurial identity provides a way of understanding how an individual behaves based on social interaction in their environment. The reasons why frugal innovation generates economic growth and social change should be addressed in a deep and reflective manner.
