ABSTRACT

Many organizations have been formed by and for women to address their underrepresentation in the industry. Elizabeth Dobson describes these activities within a qualitative, feminist framework (Digital Audio Eco Feminism). Groups such as Gender Amplified (Ebonie Smith), Female Frequency (Dani Mari and Julie Kathryn), The Creator’s Suite (Abhita Austin), and Beats by Girlz (Erin Barra) focus on women-oriented songwriting, beatmaking, training, and networking. The Yorkshire Sound Women’s Network in England hosts workshops and conferences. Audio Girl Africa has begun making their impact in Nigeria with plans to expand. Terri Winston, formerly a tenured associate professor and director of the Recording Arts Program at City College in San Francisco, California (USA), is the founder and director of the Women’s Audio Mission, which trains young girls and women in San Francisco and Oakland. Karrie Keyes, monitor engineer for Pearl Jam, cofounded https://SoundGirls.org">SoundGirls.org in order to network and welcome more women to the profession, as well as to provide training opportunities.
