ABSTRACT

This chapter discusses women in sound for film and television. In the United States, Jan McLaughlin, CAS, earned an Emmy award for her work on Nurse Jackie. Judi Lee-Headman works in location sound in England and has done shows such as The Capture and Homeland. Haniya Aslam is one of the few women working in the field in Pakistan. Sajida Khan was honored as the first woman doing sound for picture in India (at least in modern times; see also Meena Narayanan). Newcomer Lisa Xiang Li from China has made a career for herself in Los Angeles. The first, all-woman sound editing team (Ai-Ling Lee and Mildred Iatrou Morgan) worked on La La Land and First Man. Catharine Wood (USA) is a music producer, composer and owner of Planetwood Productions. April Tucker (USA) has been nominated for three MPSE Golden Reel Awards for The New Radical, Motivation 3: The Next Generation, and Squirrel Boy. Karol Urban (USA) is president of the Cinema Audio Society and worked on Grey’s Anatomy and How it’s Made. Also discussed in this chapter are careers and tools of the trade.
