ABSTRACT

This chapter focuses on women in audio-related hardware and software design. Laurie Spiegel was an early pioneer in audio software who developed the Music Mouse software for Apple Macintosh. Carla Scaletti developed Kyma, a software tool for creating and manipulating sound. EveAnna Manley is president of Manley Laboratories, which manufactures microphones and outboard processing gear. Marina Bosi did early research on audio codecs and contributed to the development of AC-2 and AC-3 (Dolby Digital) and edited the final MPEG AAC standard. Erisa Sato is chief product planner of TASCAM audio equipment in Japan. Two early pioneers who invented or patented technologies, but were met with severe legal challenges were Marie Louise Killick, inventor of the Sapphox stylus, and Elisabeth Löchen, who with Pascal Chedeville patented the L.C. Concepts playback system for surround sound in cinemas. Representing the marketing and manufacturing sector are Carol Bousquet, formerly of Ferrofluidics and executive director of the Association of Loudspeaker Manufacturing and Acoustics International (ALMA), and Dawn Birr, manager, Global Channel Development and Business Analysis for Sennheiser Pro Audio Solutions. Tools of the trade and careers are also considered.
