ABSTRACT

This chapter explores the role of equine-assisted group therapy for adolescent sexual trauma survivors. Childhood trauma, abuse, and adversity represent a significant public health crisis in our country. In the United States, child sexual abuse alone impacts as many as one in three girls and one in seven boys. In the United States, over the course of one year 16% of all youth between the ages of 14 and 17 had reported a sexual abuse incident and 28% of youth between the ages of 14 and 17 in the United States had been sexually victimized over the course of their lifetime. There is a significant need for treatments and interventions to serve this population. The current chapter provides a case example review and program evaluation data on the implementation of an equine-assisted group therapy intervention for this vulnerable population.
