ABSTRACT

This story is structurally different from the previous ones in this section, as the narrator is an adult, a practising therapist. Through repeated flashbacks, the story unfolds between the past and the present. Again, the focus here is female friendship and how sexuality can constitute the dark horse at the heart of a falling-out, especially in adolescence. Another theme here is one’s encounter with death in adult life and the subjective proximity and fluidity between a past and a present self. The possibility of true affection between women is explored in this story, and such affection, and its inevitable association with the longing for a loving and containing mother, is linked with the beginning of healing one’s wounds and finding hope again.
