ABSTRACT

This chapter familiarizes the user of Excel with basic numerical methods in Excel. In contrast to MATLAB, Excel is most probably available in almost all personal computers and it appears that its usage is increasing. It is also noted that the OpenOffice suite is a shareware version of Microsoft Office which also contains a spreadsheet similar to Excel, called calc. Excel is also used in education and it seems obvious that one should also devote some attention to the basics of Excel and how it can be used to solve numerical method problems. The Excel solver function is a nice and very useful tool within Excel. One can understand that the solver option opens the possibility for solving many engineering problems, including curve-fitting exercises. The chapter implements Newton’s method in Excel. With Newton’s method, one can find the roots of nonlinear equations.
