ABSTRACT

Although unforeseen events are part of daily life, we have an ambivalent attitude towards them, as they remind us that we cannot plan anything in our lives perfectly, and that we never know just what the future will bring. Improvisation, however, can be learned, and improvisational theatre gives us ground rules for how best to communicate and improvise in teams, and how to nurture creativity in them. The first chapter in this book offers an overview of the history of improvisational theatre. After its zenith in the Commedia Dell’Arte, in the 20th century improvisation regained significance through Jacob Levy Moreno (Psychodrama). New forms of improvisational theatre arose, and Keith Johnstone’s “Theatresports™” spread rapidly from Canada to Europe. Since the start of the 21st century, improvisational theatre has become very popular throughout the world.
