ABSTRACT

From the very start of modern improvisational theatre, the first experiments began into how its methods might also be applied away from the stage. This chapter outlines the principles and methods of improvisational theatre and shows how applied improvisation can transfer them to other domains. The “Applied Improvisation Network” was there at the start of applied improvisation’s development, and has since grown to cover the globe. Today, many companies and MBA programmes use improvisation tools to help their staff and teams to better manage change processes and complexity. By boosting fruitful collaboration and the ability to act spontaneously, these tools help leaders and managers in particular to enhance their effectiveness. This is achieved through work that focuses on the themes of presence, flexibility, and communicative competence – precisely what is needed in times of change.
