ABSTRACT

Improvisational theatre offers many methods and exercises relating to how we present ourselves. These can enhance every appearance and presentation, so they are described in this chapter. Two of the most important characteristics for a good presenter are presence and empathy. Presence is the ability to lend our full attention to the here and now. Empathy allows us to put ourselves in the position of our audience. Other important elements for every presentation are the proper use of storytelling, and a status that is appropriate to the target group. Humour is also essential, because it gives rise to emotional transparency and allows the audience to perceive the presenter as authentic. Finally, if the presenter knows her subject well and has images of it in her mind, and if she can translate abstract terms and figures into scenes, examples, and stories for her audience, then she will be better able to vary her voice and delivery, and the audience will more easily grasp and understand the subject matter.
