ABSTRACT

In vitro fertilisation (IVF) and intracytoplasmic sperm injection (ICSI) services were established to provide treatment to infertile couples. The technology used to provide these therapeutic services may be adapted to a screening and preimplantation diagnostic programme for genetic disorders. Prior to the introduction of these services detailed consideration needs to be given to the ethical implications of the proposed developments. The services require additional resources, suitably trained personnel and a central laboratory to undertake the appropriate genetic testing on a single blastomere.
