ABSTRACT

Indian Railways, which is ranked one of the world’s top ten employers by number of employees, advertised jobs in early 2018. India’s young population represents at once both great opportunity and immense challenge. India is urbanising rapidly but falls behind most developed markets in terms of the percentage of people that live in cities. As China’s economic and political power increases and the US steps back from its traditional role as global leader, India’s role in Asia is changing. India has been cautious, even critical, of the China-led One Belt and One Road (OBOR) initiative. India feels threatened if surrounded by Chinese influence and investments. The US$62 billion China–Pakistan Economic Corridor is a flagship OBOR project currently raising the hackles of India’s intelligentsia. India fears that the US’s withdrawal of financial support to Pakistan opens the door for the Chinese.
