ABSTRACT

Millennials have become something of a cartoon myth. The number of Indian-origin millennials with great desire to leave the surroundings in which they’ve grown up to move back to India may be small. The Economist may be dubious about the scale of India’s middle class but the reality on the ground is that, whether documented or not, in bike dealerships and coffee shops in emerging cities across India there are millions of Jays eager to saddle up and rev the throttle. The retreat from public spaces is a feature of modern Indian life earlier noted. The Beatles famously visited India at the peak of their success. Bangalore, the south Indian city officially known as Bengaluru but still typically called by its traditional name, is India’s tech hub, the so-called ‘Silicon Valley of India’, renowned for its call centres and soul-destroying traffic. The numbers of non-resident Indians or people of Indian origin who reside in other countries are huge.
