ABSTRACT

This chapter discusses the impact on the villages over a ten year period under three broad headings. These are: economic impact, sociological impact and changes in social relations as they relate to the process of class formation. The indicators used in measuring these changes include among others, household income, infant mortality, life expectancy, access to portable water, health provision, access to motorable roads, and birth control practices. At Elele, average household income at the time of this survey was 3,150 naira, not too far behind those at the Ubima Nucleus Estate. The pre-project average income in Elele, like in Ubima, was around 600 naira. Older members of the households are supported from family income earned by women and young men. At control village, most older men of age 70-85 years continue to maintain their own plots which they farm regularly for subsistence.
