ABSTRACT

The introductory chapter looks at the moral dilemmas associated with military force and explicates the classical just war paradigm, consisting of the ethics of the decision to go to war (jus ad bellum), the ethics of how war is fought (jus in bello), and the ethics of post-conflict (jus post bellum). The chapter also discusses some of the trends in how U.S. government and society have viewed wars over time.
