ABSTRACT

The outlines steps in individualized educational planning when a youth becomes involved with child welfare with the creation of an education staff (ES) position. This outline serves as a sample to be individualized for the position and county in which it is implemented. Child welfare departments in partnership with action teams have identified which staff will initiate Best Interest Determination meetings, educational notification to schools, and notifications or referrals to the ES for direct service. When a new ES position is implemented, the action team should take time to write out a training procedure for the ES to become accustomed to the agencies, courts, and schools in which he/she will be interfacing. The ES should learn more about what qualifies a youth to attend certain schools, enrollment windows, eligibility criteria, typical student portrait, discipline policies, credit recovery options, and overall school culture of most utilized schools.
