ABSTRACT

This essay looks back at the controversies over children’s use of the media and technology tools of the day, and brings these concerns forward to the present and the challenges and opportunities digital media offers and how it influences young children, families, educators and developers. Differences in the smartphone and table devices and how they are used is noted. The prevalence of these devices and that they are in young children’s hands are often at odds with concerns about screen time and problematic screen use. This essay explores the implications for child development when children are growing up surrounded by digital media and raises the possibility that research may show benefits for children. The essay concludes with essential advice about the need for more research to answer questions about the impact and implications of media use by young children.
