ABSTRACT

This essay looks at child-centered design principles and addresses what they are, why we should use them, and who should use them. Child-centered design refers to designing products for children by incorporating children’s perspectives, needs, and rights, at the heart of the design process. Designers must be keenly aware of the physical, cognitive, social, and emotional development of the children they are designing for. The ten principles of the Designing for Children’s Guide are discussed, as part of the designing for children’s rights initiative with UNICEF. The guidelines are presented in a child voice, to accentuate the core value of child-centered design and that child-centered design products create a baseline for quality products for children.
