ABSTRACT

The production of modern and sustainable bioenergy can be an effective way of substituting fossil energy (e.g., petroleum and coal), while at the same time achieving other macroeconomic objectives: increase energy security, create income and jobs, and improving local and global environmental quality. The chapter presents an overview of the key concepts discussed in this book. The book addresses energy-related issues and global trends such as how bioenergy will evolve in a very competitive scenario of other renewable energies. It then begins with the Latin American, Caribbean, and African (LACAf) Project analysis on why developing countries must or not adopt policies to implement modern and sustainable bioenergy in their respective energy matrix. The book contains detailed maps for sugarcane potential for Colombia and Mozambique with a correspondent estimate of the total bioenergy potential considering minimum adequate land.
