ABSTRACT

In Mozambique, there are several legal restrictions for agricultural expansion, as well as a series of incentives for economic activities including mining, logging, agriculture and hunting grounds, among others. The physical restrictions are those that are considered mandatory because they are strongly restrictive. They can be related to soil and climate conditions. Three sources of data were considered in the selection of areas with soils strongly restricted: soil classification, prepared by the CTC sugarcane experts; the updated land use and land cover maps; climatic maps, such as Koppen classification, precipitation and temperature maps. The Global Bioenergy Partnership suggests some indicators for sustainable production of sugarcane, such as life cycle analysis, land use change and soil and water quality. Although the climatic restriction is mostly considered a strong physical restriction, the possibility of producing with irrigation is a constant reality in some regions. Different sorts of irrigation are present in almost all sugarcane areas in the country.
