ABSTRACT

Colombia is located in the northwestern corner of South America, and it has a surface of 1.1 million km. Its climate conditions go from warm tropical at sea level to the perpetual snows at 4,000 meters at the sea level. Moreover, most of the country has a tropical and subtropical weather, which is suitable for the growing of sugarcane. The Latin American, Caribbean, and African (LACAf) project is carried out in order to diagnose the country's energy and food situation and determine the physical potential for the production of ethanol based on sugarcane and verify that an expansion of cane crops can be carried out. It also determines which the current production models are and which could be modified in the future without affecting food security by determining social factors and economic development. A comparison of the production of sugarcane, sugar and alcohol between Brazil and Colombia shows that although Brazil leads in terms of production, Colombia has higher productivity.
