ABSTRACT

The Rome Treaty sets up an international court to hear crimes of three types: genocide, crimes against humanity, and war crimes. Genocide is an act committed with intent to partially or wholly destroy a national, ethnic, racial, or religious group. Gases that contribute to the greenhouse effect are those gases in the atmosphere that block heat from escaping and remain semi-permanently in the atmosphere. On a molecule-for-molecule basis, methane is a far more potent greenhouse gas than carbon dioxide. Any Conference of the Parties is a governing body of an international convention, and includes all parties to the convention. The World Climate Conference-3 was held in Geneva, Switzerland, August 31 to September 4, 2009. The chapter discusses the basic principles of climate change–namely, how the emissions from burning fossil fuels trap heat to cause rapid warming of the atmosphere and planet, and why it is imperative to switch over to forms of renewable energy.
