ABSTRACT

This chapter provides a series of assumptions which composed the official view of European citizenship as presented by European institutions and their spokespersons. It describes the main points European Union citizenship. The chapter looks at efforts being made in order to implement the various legal dispositions contained in article 8 of Treaty on the European Union. European citizenship is mainly looked at as a top-down process. The chapter explores the ways in which European citizenship could be developed and/or expanded. The political Union as well as a citizenship of the European Union is required only to the extent that they are considered to be necessary for a more efficient completion and functioning of the internal market. The implementation of the various dispositions contained in article 8 can be analyzed both at the European level and at the national level.
