ABSTRACT

Mediation can be a low cost and highly flexible approach to conflicts and may be adopted by private citizens, international organisations, and any actor whose behaviour can affect the dynamics of the conflicting parties' relations. Third party intervention as a response to conflict has been used everywhere and in a variety of contexts as well as with regard to a variety of issues. With regard to representatives third typology of conflict, a lot of the mediator's attention and efforts will be focused on the question of mutual recognition by the parties, factions or movements that may not be easily identified. Third party involvement can theoretically start at any point of the mediation activities. In reality, mediation is not even needed to come to a settlement as it can be enforced by both internal and external parties whose coercive power is strong enough as not to require its services.
