ABSTRACT

This chapter examines some of the problems of implementing ideas. It considers how various computer application packages such as COPE/ Decision Explorer, PERT and computer simulation can help the implementation and acceptance of new ideas. Contingency plans are necessary when implementing ideas. Ideas may have to be sold to people who can authorise their implementation. Getting people to change their attitudes is fundamental to reducing resistance to new ideas. Cognitive mapping portrays ideas, beliefs, values and attitudes and their relationship to one another in a manner that facilitates examination and analysis. The chapter looks at the role of communication in overcoming resistance to change. It also examines how ideas might be put into action. The chapter also looks at how we might foster a climate for change in an organisation. One needs to anticipate the problems that will arise and the objections that will be raised. The chapter considers the importance of 'potential problem analysis'.
