ABSTRACT

In Action Research (Cycle Two), working with a new set of participants, an interpretation of Stanislavski’s Units and Actions sequence is put into practice, to investigate its potential in enabling those with dyslexia to read, understand, and speak the text with emotional connection, character goals, and a recognition of the layers of inference inherent in the writing. Working on a scene from Shakespeare’s Measure for Measure, a physical action approach to the text is explored through practical trial. Problems are revealed with Stanislavski’s Action and Active Analysis method in camouflaging misunderstandings and non-perception of word detail and meaning. Conversely, the method is shown to enable a grasp of the overall gist of narrative and character wants. The act of drawing in capturing the detail in the text is demonstrated to be more successful than physical actions in this case. However, a prevailing problem with symbol and gesture signification in confusing word meaning and grounding of the text is exposed.
