ABSTRACT

The introduction explains the need for and the purpose of the book, as well as the nature of the disciplines with which we are here concerned (psychological, sociological and sociotechnical). It reminds readers of global unsustainability and energy trends. It refers to research demonstrating that different types of human behaviour are amenable to different types of intervention – at the psychological, sociological and sociotechnical levels. The chapter introduces the argument that major behavioural changes require support at all levels and that this in turn requires integrated, interdisciplinary perspectives. The main purpose of the book is stated as showing how concepts that help to explain individual-level psychology can be integrated with sociotechnical transitions theory, with a particular focus on energy.
