ABSTRACT

This chapter explores the difference between 'inequality' and 'difference' in a multi cultural society and about what each of them tells us about their supposed causes. And the starting point for our analysis has been that the domain of inequality may have a tendency to occupy a larger territory in a multi cultural society if we take too little account of multi culturalism itself. The distinction between 'inequality' and 'difference' therefore is blurred; there is some overlap and more uncertainty about where the dividing line is to be put. Among the many interpretations of the idea of equality of opportunity one of the most prominent holds that in a just society, everyone must have an equal opportunity to pursue their chosen life plans particularly in the domain of employment. The difficulty with perceptions of multi ethnicity is often that some minority groups view their society as multi ethnic but only a minority of the majority do so.
