ABSTRACT

Environmental Lawyer James Thornton of Client Earth has described China’s emerging eco-civilization as the best response to the world’s environmental crisis. This chapter first considers the broad sweep of civilization change in the context of the world’s and businesses’ response to sustainability so far. Foucault’s epistemic analysis is then proposed as a mechanism and theoretical foundation for such a change. After which, some of the Chinese cultural background for, as well as steps taken towards, an ecological civilization is presented. This is followed by a case study of Tianjin China Bio-Technology Group Co. Ltd. to see how one Chinese company has managed and presented itself within the emerging eco-civilization. Finally, a conclusion is drawn and a business orientation towards the needs of an ecological civilization is suggested.
