ABSTRACT

This chapter presents some closing thoughts on the concepts covered in the preceding chapters of this book. It includes some other people’s views. Hence, this chapter of users profiles. Cambridgeshire Libraries & Information Service was formed in 1974 from four constituent authorities, Cambridge City, Peterborough City, Huntingdonshire and Cambridgeshire & The Isle of Ely County Council. All the library services were using manual issue systems or photocharging and card catalogues. The Council agreed to finance a replacement for the existing mixture of systems but this did not allow for any extension to further service points. On this basis the search for a new system began. Jordanhill College is the largest College of Education in Scotland. Introducing automation into a library which relies almost totally on manual procedures has not been easy, particularly as when it has been achieved within existing staffing levels, and without money to buy-in records for retroconversion.
