ABSTRACT

The family values of the Unification Church are different from those of the Catholic Church or of the spectrum of Protestant Churches, the spectrum of aboriginal cultures, the other 'high' religions, the spectrum of political parties, the spectrum of cult groups and the Mafia. There has been a great deal of interest in 'family values,' politically and in the social sciences. The organizations share a 'pro-family' stance, but they differ in what they mean by family, and what specifically is involved in being 'pro-family.' The chapter looks at family values from two perspectives, each providing a dynamic set of factors affecting the way family life will develop, particularly in relation to the family role as early educator of the child: values of families; and values in families. In general, values in families have focused on the best way to raise children to be healthy, happy and competent to take social roles.
