ABSTRACT

The inquiry has focused on the interrelations between two complex and controversial topics: globalization and the family. Both terms are used in different ways, and each engenders controversy about its nature, its future, and their interrelations. The essential paradox stems from the universal expectation that families mediate between society and their individual members, socializing their offspring for societal roles. The chapter presents five conundrums wrapped in a paradox: continuity verses change; broad verses narrow focus; intentional verses laissez-faire strategies; security verses danger in the world; and moral absolutism verses relativism. Among the beneficial characteristics of families as informal educational settings is the creation of a stable environment. Families are widely seen as having the task of providing a refuge against threatening aspects of outside life - danger and violence in the streets, ruthless competitiveness in the marketplace, and impersonal relationships in urban life.
