ABSTRACT

The German desire for integration into the West and association with the East could perhaps be brought closer to realisation if the troops of the four victor powers remained where they are. Perhaps East-West integration could start this way on German soil. The increasing integration of France into a European identity with constraints for the status of France could cause frustration. The headlines of French newspapers during the visit of Mazowiecki and Jaruzelski to Paris gave the impression that the year 1938 had returned. German unification is supported but Germany should remain in NATO. In the discussions about the political structure of future Europe the German question plays an important role not only for the Soviet Union but also for the other countries of Eastern and Western Europe.
