ABSTRACT

This chapter seeks to explore issues related to the drive for competence-based education and professional training promoted by the National Council for Vocational Qualifications in Britain. It proposes to examine developments within the field of higher professional education and development, particularly within the teacher education and health sectors. The location of vocational/professional learning in the workplace has been a feature of recent developments in education and industry, though it is important to note the wide range of interpretations of work-based learning currently operating in different sectors. The new models of professionalism in education, health and social work are essentially client-centered and thus require a response from professionals which increasingly depends on concerted team efforts. By combining the neo-Fordist and de-professionalizing forces, it is possible to explain a number of recent trends in vocational and professional studies.
