ABSTRACT

This chapter explores an important and unique theme in Korean higher education—student political activism—and its relationship to university classroom learning environments. While several strategies are suggested for college teachers to cope effectively in politically volatile classroom situations, readers are encouraged to develop new approaches to teaching that incorporate appropriate social contexts and political realities. Student activism presents certain challenges for classroom instructors in Korean universities and colleges. There are several issues which the Korean ministry of education—as well as every college and university community in the country—must continue to grapple with in addressing the impact of student activism in higher education. There has been a strong sympathy among students and citizens for student activists’ insistence on social equality and democracy. Faculty must be fully aware of the social contexts of classroom discussions, and be equipped with the skills and resources to effectively cope with politically active students.
