Leaving the ill-fated Guru, with its way cleared in front, continued its advance to the large market-town of Gyantse, about 80 miles down the plain. Only one able-bodied man was present in the village, who said that all the other men and youths had been drafted off to Gyantse to fight against people. The Tibetans catch fish by wading a long distance out into the lake and trawling with drag-nets, who catch huge fish in the way. Meanwhile the sky clouded over and squalls of wind sprang up and lashed the waters of the lake into large waves, which broke up the ice fringing the shore and churned it with the half-frozen snow into white foam. The Grand Lamas seemed now to have fully committed themselves to hostilities, for the action was deliberately fought all through. Villagers from the hamlet of Shalu, selling some fuel consisting mainly of top roots of dried thistles, which were rather abundant on the plain.
