ABSTRACT

While there is general recognition of the importance of narrative and metaphor in human sense-making, it seems that those who have designed curricula and everyday teaching practices have not been particularly successful in incorporating these crucial features of sense-making in supporting children’s learning. This chapter describes some of the reasons for this difficulty and looks at some methods and techniques that show promise in finally achieving this desirable educational aim. The chapter also explores how focusing on metaphor and narrative can add some useful dimensions and richness to our general conception of education.
