ABSTRACT

In order to implement the empirical analysis of management fashions, it was necessary to construct a sample of the published management literature. In studying many disciplines, especially those with extensive literatures, it is unrealistic to include all published items within any study. A number of attempts have been made to address the problem of drawing representative samples from published literature in order to carry out bibliometric analyses. The attempts have concentrated chiefly upon the natural and physical sciences, since these fields have been the main focus of research within bibliometrics. Various researchers have focused upon a single journal for their analysis. The journal is often selected because it is regarded as the most influential within a particular discipline. Single journals may also be selected due to their disciplinary positioning. For the purposes of the pilot study, a quantitative approach to journal ranking was employed. The technique chosen was that first suggested by Pichappan defined as the Discipline-Contribution Score (DCS)..
