ABSTRACT

In seeking to individualise care, policies, processes and procedures for managing the centre’s delivery of services must be integrated within each centre and within the hierarchy of any wider management structure responsible for it. Individualising services is an accepted principle of good care practice. Individualising care depends on achieving an integrated approach to service delivery that ensures continuity and consistency of care. Residential care was a controversial topic for Traumatic brain injury (TBI) individuals and their informal carers, because discussing this choice in the early stages of recovery might suggest abandonment and trigger guilt in the family carer. The dual recommendation takes account of families’ determination that their head-injured relative continue to live at home as before. The particular dedicated TBI case manager role is recommended as the most appropriate and economical model for ensuring the coordination of care for TBI people. The dual recommendation suggests a key role for the case manager in individualising care decisions.
