ABSTRACT

The nonlinear response of music directors’ speakers is less of a problem, as the reference track gets the same treatment as their own mix. The loud instruments of the holy quaternity have been taken out; the softer signals in the mix suddenly become audible, like the little embellishments of an arrangement or the reverb on a vocal. Sample Magic’s “Magic AB” makes comparing with reference tracks a breeze. After inserting it in the mix bus, files can be dragged into multiple slots. Music directors will want their mix to sound good on all speakers. Professionals check their mix on big speakers, small speakers, headphones, laptop speakers, car stereos, sound docks, ghetto blasters or EarPods. A visual representation of the spectrum can then be of great help. Similar to recording, an analyzer will warn music directors for unusual amounts of sub lows or ultra highs during the mix.
