ABSTRACT

In the studio, speakers are the extension of music producer’s ears. But every speaker will, more or less, color the sound, and this can lead to the wrong decisions being taken. With better speakers, a recording or mix will come out better. Acoustics play a big role in every single stage of the production, be it recording, mixing or mastering. Outside, in the free field, an instrument or speaker will sound completely natural, as sound waves can travel to the ear directly. Traditional studios generally offer big speakers built into the wall. Speakers can be active or passive. Passive speakers are driven by a separate power amp. Active speakers have a power amp built in, so the speaker cable can be short. A subwoofer is an enclosure containing a big speaker and a built-in amplifier. It can be used to extend the bass performance of nearfield speakers.
