ABSTRACT
This chapter introduces the reader to many of the key terms and ideas in the substance abuse field. The three main models of addiction are presented: moral, disease, and family systems. The chapter is designed to begin to orient the reader into understanding addiction as both an intrapersonal and interpersonal experience. A case study is provided that will be used throughout every chapter to help apply the concepts to a case.
