ABSTRACT

This chapter explores the intersection of diversity issues, most notably ethnicity, culture, and addiction. It is important for the therapist to understand the role that substance use and abuse has in various cultural groups and its impact on therapy. This is especially so since the United States is projected to soon become a “minority White” country. This chapter presents issues of family diversity; especially in regard to general characteristics, adolescent drug use, risk and protective factors, and various aspects of treatment for Hispanic American, African American, Asian American, American Indian, and sexual and gender minority families.
