ABSTRACT

Multiculturality is geographically located in specific housing areas in the major cities. For nationalists, multiculturality is the result of uncontrolled and encouraged immigration of ‘racially inferior’ and culturally alien elements. The meaning of multiculturality is the empirical observation that several cultures, understood as ethnies, reside within one bounded political, regional, or geographic entity that is separated from other entities of the same kind. Multiculturality implies living with cultural diversity and blurred boundaries. Blurred cultural boundaries are right there at the centre of power. Reindeer-herding Samis have always existed within the boundaries of the Swedish state. In Europe these boundaries are usually marked in the terrain – caims, stone mounds, barbed wire, walls, minefields, or iron curtains. Crossing national boundaries and settling in another state entails issues of differential rights, participation in the political process, and access to power. The ease of travelling from airport to airport facilitates movements across national boundaries.
