ABSTRACT

Due to the dearth of processes for amplifying musical symbolic content within the analytical psychology literature, a musical symbols lexicon is proposed as a new resource for analysts and analysands focusing exclusively on musical content. Various musical archetypal images that emerge within analysis are referenced including ascending/descending pitch, repeated musical figures (e.g. ostinato, drone) and the crescendo. In order to explicitly illustrate this idea the musical archetypal image of Tonality is explored in depth along with its inherent relationship to the symbol of Home as the archetype of centrality, return, source, birthplace and resolution. By exploring the history, theory and cultural correlates of Western tonality and atonality through the lens of analytical psychology, deep connections are illustrated between the musical and psychic experience of a tonal centre. It is proposed that the notion of tonality within musical systems can be utilized as a metaphor for Jung’s map of the psyche toward therapeutic benefit within a music-oriented analysis.
