ABSTRACT

The chapter traces the recent influence of constructionist, dialogical and narrative approaches in systemic psychotherapy and in psychotherapy and mental health generally. It examines the progress these approaches have offered for a multilayered understanding of ‘culture’ while at the same time showing the preoccupation with an emphasis on interaction and communication in the moment. The chapter then locates the blind spots which accompany these approaches: such as background information, a comprehensive assessment of developmental, historical and cultural contexts as well as of institutional racism. It illustrates the argument with case discussions.
