ABSTRACT

This chapter reflects on the therapists’ process when issues of race become foreground for the therapist, the client or the student (if in a training context). It is looked at from both sides of the race divide, identifying some of the processes that encourage and maintain the ability to stay with the race dialogue and to identify the processes individuals go through to finding their voice in this area. A central issue for the therapy profession is how to create a sense of safety, enough for there to be an exploration and dialogue around these issues, which does not overly trigger shame, guilt, deflection or silence or the many other emotional states that are associated with entering into this area.
