ABSTRACT

The Department of Library and Information Studies at Manchester Polytechnic offers a comprehensive programme of courses, both full-time and part-time at undergraduate, postgraduate and masters degree level, in order to meet the fast developing needs of the library and information profession. A major strand of the Department’s activities is focussed on state-of-the-art information technology teaching and facilities. Such facilities are continually under development. An important step forward has been possible in the past academic year (1990–1991) with the implementation of BookshelF, the multi-user library system from Specialist Computer Systems and Software Ltd. The BookshelF software has been sponsored by its suppliers and is available in the Department on both the Polytechnic’s Prime computer system and on a small local area network.
