ABSTRACT

Having discussed Hindu-Muslim relations from elite perspectives, I contemplate the perspectives of ‘subaltern’ and ‘common’ people who all too often go unheard: women in slums, Dalits and lower castes, people in the countryside and worshippers at syncretic shrines. Far from confirming the bromide that India is such a diverse country that any generalization is futile, this chapter shows that social diversity does not rule out the observation of general trends.
