ABSTRACT

Safe group formation is dependent on reasonable forms of suppression of within group violence. However between group violence is a continuing occurrence. Violence between groups, ignored by psychoanalysis, is often the end result of conflicts between belief systems. Beliefs are a cognitive attempt to organize perceptions and have their own dynamics. False beliefs (hallucinosis) of a Jewish threat were initiated and used by the Nazis to organize a violent society as a solution in their quest for a European Empire. Nation building, ethnic cleansing and warfare is often based on conflicts between belief systems that seek an “imaginary” purity with removal of the “Other” made dangerous.
